Although saying goodbye to a loved one is a universal experience, there are different customs to honour the life of the deceased. The diversity of funeral traditions in South Africa reflects our cultural richness and the beauty of our heritage. Here are some traditional ways we lay our loved ones to rest.
Xhosa
Xhosa tradition includes rituals like the umkhapho, led by the clan chief. The belief is that through this ritual, loved ones can be in right standing with the deceased if they become an ancestor. The funeral tradition includes slaughtering an animal, and the meat is eaten by those attending the funeral.
Zulu
In Zulu tradition, an animal is slaughtered to wash away the pollution of death, and imphepho (incense) is burned to communicate with the ancestors. Those participating in the funeral clean their hands with a mixture of roots and leaves before and after the burial.
Islam
For Islamic funerals, the deceased is buried as soon as possible after death. The body is washed and then wrapped in a simple white shroud before being buried directly into the earth, facing Qibla (the direction of Mecca in Saudi Arabia). Mourners say a specific funeral prayer called Salat al-Janazah.
Christianity
A Christian funeral service is usually held at a church, a funeral home, or the graveside. It includes prayers, hymns, and Bible readings and may have a viewing for loved ones. The deceased is either buried or cremated, and the ashes may be given to the family to keep.
Hinduism
In Hindu culture, cremation is preferred and happens within 24 hours after death. The body of the deceased is washed and then dressed in white before cremation, and prayers and rituals are performed before and after. Family and friends usually visit the deceased's home to provide comfort.
Judaism
Jewish funerals take place within 24 hours of death. The body of the deceased is washed and dressed in plain white. Burial is in a simple coffin, and the funeral includes prayers and Psalm readings. Loved ones keep a period of shiva, and visitors come to offer comfort.
Part of saying goodbye to the ones we love is giving them a dignified send-off that honours their culture and traditions. A funeral policy with Monarch Insurance can help cover funeral or memorial service costs for you and your family.
